Eco Friendly Cleaning Tips

Eco-friendly cleaning products are becoming more popular as people realise the environmental benefits of avoiding harmful substances found in non-natural products. For the more environmentally conscious of us the below tips provide in many cases less expensive and more eco-friendly house cleaning alternatives.

You can also save lots of money by using natural ingredients such as lemons, white vinegar and bi-carbonate of soda, which usually masquerade as food ingredients in your cupboards.

A blocked drain or sink can be a real inconvenience instead of pouring drain un-blocker, which is made from lots of poisonous chemicals you can mix up one cup of bicarbonate of soda and a cup each of vinegar and salt. Pour the mixture down your drain or sink after an hour or so boil a kettle of water and rinse.

Removing lime-scale is a real task and it often builds up faster if you live in a hard water area. Instead of buying expensive lime-scale remover which again contains substances which are not environmentally friendly you can use lemon juice and soak it with some cotton wool, wrap it around the tap make sure they are not plated and cover with a plastic bag secured with some string or a rubber band. Leave the bag on overnight and then in the morning remove the bag and scrub the tap with an old toothbrush.

If you do not like to breath in all the potentially harmful fumes that air fresheners spray there are safer alternatives. You can simmer a cinnamon stick in some water with a couple of drops of lemon juice this leaves your house smelling sweet.

There is a natural environmentally friendly solution for all your house cleaning needs even if you need to give your windows a clean. Use one of your old spray bottles and fill it with some water, 5 table spoons of vinegar and some lemon juice. Spray the solution on to your windows and wipe down with some old newspaper.

Out of all of the things you can clean in your home the toilet has to be the least favourite. To get rid of nasty hard water marks pour some fizzy cola down the toilet, leave it for about an hour and then flush.

If you have kids or you lead an active lifestyle you will no doubt be aware of how dirty your bath can become to remedy this simply use 1 part white vinegar and 5 parts water and give your bath a good scrub.

Finger marks on stainless steel surfaces and utensils can be unsightly especially if you are entertaining guests. To leave stainless steel sparkling use olive oil and wipe with some kitchen towel.

To freshen up your carpets you do not need to buy anything special or expensive. Simply mix up some bicarbonate of soda and talcum powder, leave for a few minutes and then vacuum.

You do not need to buy furniture polish either. Use an old spray bottle and mix a small cup of olive oil and another cup of lemon juice.

To clean your brass ornaments and leave them sparkling clean mix half a teaspoon of salt and half a cup of white vinegar, and then add enough flour to make a paste. After you have done this apply a thick coat, leave it on for about 30-40 minutes and then rinse off.
